Celebrating the Harvest With Mrs. Wages

Indian Summer: Celebrating the Glories of the Harvest

“The trees came into bearing at seven years old, and the apples were extra well colored and smooth skinned. I have had apple buyers and nursery men tell me that my orchard was the prettiest they ever saw...”
- Laura Ingalls Wilder, “My Apple Orchard” 1912

Apples hold a special place in our hearts. Although originally from Turkey, apples were brought to North America with colonists in the 17th century, and the first apple orchard on the North American continent was said to be near Boston in 1625. And so for nearly 400 years, apples have found a permanent place in American history, folk tales and on farm tables.

It’s hard to resist the aroma of cinnamon, cloves and other spices found in fall apple dishes. Tempting recipes in this issue include some new additions to the Mrs. Wages line featuring our own fruit pie filling and apple spice mixes. Try our Apple Spice Cake, Caramel Apples, and Cranberry Applesauce recipes.

Want to learn more about how to cook with apples and which variety is best for fall dishes? Master Canner and extension veteran Shirley Camp provides some must read tips on apple purchasing, storing and cooking.

As the nights cool down, and your kitchen warms up, Food in Jars’ blogger Marisa McClellan shares her unique take on fall with mouth watering recipes for Apple Butter, Honey Lemon Apple Jam and Whole Wheat Spiced Apple Butter Bread.

And finally as the fall harvest gets into full swing, Iowa bloggers from Nostalgia Farms, share their seasonal favorites like delicious Apple Pancakes.

From all of us at Mrs. Wages, may you enjoy the fruits of the fall harvest, surrounded especially by friends and family at your own table…
