By Marisa McClellan, Food in Jars
Though jam will always be my first love when it comes to preserving food, I find that as I get older, I gravitate more and more in towards the savory, puckery, tangy side of things. Having an array of pickles in the fridge and on the pantry shelf means that I can perk up my daily menu basics without any extra preparation (save prying the lid off the jar).
Does your leftover bowl of soup feel a little boring? Add a few dilly carrot sticks and suddenly everything seems much brighter.
If your basic turkey and cheese sandwich isn’t inspiring your tastebuds, slice up a tart garlic dill and add it to the sandwich stack.
And while I like a good salad as much as the next girl, I do find that endless bowls of lettuce can get a little bland. However, once I add a couple scoops of pickled beets and some crumbled goat cheese, I’m happy to call it a meal.
